Features intended for release in the second Caves & Cliffs update for this year (1.18) can still be accessed via the Caves & Cliffs Prototype Data Pack.
What is the Caves & Cliffs Prototype Data Pack?
This data pack allows you to use features that are under development and intended to be released in the second Caves & Cliffs update in your Minecraft: Java Edition worlds.
How do I access the Caves & Cliffs Prototype Data Pack?
Important: Using the Caves & Cliffs Prototype Data Pack to access features still under development means that your world might crash, break, or not work with future updates.
When creating a new world:
- Download the data pack
- Launch the game, go to the "Create New World" screen, and click the "Data Packs" button
- Drag the downloaded zip file onto the Minecraft window
- The game will ask you if you want to add the data pack - click "Yes"
- Click the play arrow on the data pack that just appeared in the list - this will move it to the list on the right-hand side of the screen
- Click the "Done" button and continue creating your world as normal
How do I know if my world has experimental features enabled?
To identify if the Caves & Cliffs Prototype Data Pack is active in your world, refer to “Options” > “Resource Packs”.
Will it be possible to use the Caves & Cliffs Prototype Data Pack in my pre-existing world?
The data pack can only be used in newly created worlds.
Will it be possible to upgrade worlds that use the Data Pack to the full Caves & Cliffs Part 2 release later this year?
Upgrading to the Part 2 release (1.18) will not be supported for worlds that use the Caves & Cliffs Prototype Data Pack.
